Buranda Therapy Group
Our History |
Buranda Therapy Group
was first formed in 1990 to help disabled bowlers. Since this time coordinators and trainee coaches have worked at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. BTG members work closely with professionals from PA Hospital and, from 1995, QE11 Hospital as well as Eventide Home and Buranda Special School. The efforts of our hard working team members have seen over 1,500 people with various disabilities enjoy the challenges of being involved in competitive sport and various forms of recreation. As a Volunteer Improvement Program our mission is dedicated to improvement of the "quality of life" of people with disabilities. |

Our Goals |
At BTG we are not
resting on our laurels. We are working towards extending our unique program to every
public hospital, initially in Queensland, but eventually throughout Australia. Our goal is to ensure that people with disabilities can enjoy greater social interaction and freedom. We are continually refining the program and are presently developing it for use Australia wide. |

Our Methods |
Each coach specialises
in a disability area including people with Strokes, Cerebral Palsy, Intellectual
Disabilities, Alzheimer's, Schizophrenia, Down's Syndrome, Visual Impairment, Amputation
and various Head Injuries. These are just a few of the problem areas we cover as part of
our rehabilitation projects with medical and remedial professionals. Each coach then passes on the real-life training they receive to other coaches entering the program, providing an excellent "buddy" system. We recently received a grant from the Gaming Machine Community Benefit Fund which will enable us to provide a higher level of training and feedback for coaching people with disabilities. |

"from the ashes of despair come the roses of success..." |
"There are no charges for the
services we offer, but we do depend on public donations to continue and expand our work.
Donations of $2 or more are tax-deductible. We are always on the lookout for volunteers to train to enable us to reach all Queensland Hospitals. If you feel you can be of assistance, please contact one of our members listed below." |
