‘ A Template to conduct a full day bowls training program’

(edition 111  - 2004 of thoughts & observations on lawn bowls)

I have been working with a few people and at a few clubs of late and in discussion with fellow coaches, it is apparent that not too much is written as to how we coaches conduct training sessions or perhaps a full day program.

Here is a recent sample of what we do in ‘Elbows’ which may be of some interest to other (bowls) coaches

Sunday April 4 2004, Richmond Union Bowls club venue

 (Incorporated program later with VIS Bowls session)

Attendees – Elbows squad and 3 sports scientists

8.30am  breakfast & discussion on recent performances
9.00am Warm up physical toning exercises , 5 minutes
caterpillar session and alternate drives as warm up for 8 ends
Personal skills rating comparative record to Mar 14 in partners
jacks, min & max lengths, Mat length (ML) & MW (width), yard over drive
10.00am Preparation for each personal need for Australian Indoor
video analysis of technique using the DARTFISH and SWINGER computer systems
set play singles 45 minutes in ends of 9 (3 opponents in    section)
score card experiment & walk to the head
12.30 pm coach / sports scientisit reactions and review of standards
discuss game analysis- appraisal of card record
each member to inform what they analysed, recorded,       learnt and plan to undertake
1pm BYO lunch and discussion and evaluation of morning performance
discussion on the definition of ‘pressure’ from each players viewpoint
reaction of coach and sports scientists
2.00pm VIS men squad off under direction of Bob Middleton for afternoon
2.00pm ‘Elbows’ squad continues on with video analysis of technique using DARTFISH  / SWINGER
modified GAMES simulating pressure: different situations
won first game / lost first game
one game all play sudden death 3 ends
won first game losing second 0-4 after 3 ends
meet with sports scientist for overview of the value of this approach
score card experiment & walk to the head
4.30pm coach reactions and review including join in with VIS squad for summary review
discussion
-          goals & plans for 2004
-          applications into VIS
-          Australian Indoor event
specific training requirements for following month
viewing the video for the day’s program
if possible burning a CD for the players to take home
finish & drinky poohs
 

I feel it is most important that the players, and others servicing a program, have this above agenda provided to them earlier in the week so that they are all aware of what to participate in and what requirement is expected from them as contributors.
