‘Learning from Coaching Supremos’

(edition 116  - 2004 of thoughts & observations on lawn bowls)

I referred to Ric Charlesworth as an Australian icon in coaching in last week’s column.  And one of the things he has done for us students of sport (excellence) is put his approach in print for us all to read and learn .

Peter Belliss, the New Zealand bowls supremo, and I were fortunate enough to be the two shortlisted interviewees for the national bowls coaching job and he pipped me for the coaching position last week, and like Ric he too put his approach on paper in a good bowls book a decade ago, a must read for bowlers.

A few months ago Geoff Oakley, a former national bowls coach, encouraged me to complete my own book on coaching with the phrase something akin to ‘..go for it’.

Without the load of the national coach role, I have time to give to the writing.  Here then is a preface and a contents page as an overview of what I will be drafting in my book proposed for publication in 2005 as a lead in to the 2006 Games in Melbourne.

Preface

Reasons for the book
As far back as September 1991 in about my fourth year in bowls when I first met Paul Richards, then Australian Men’s Bowls team captain, and head coach, SASI Bowls, I was utterly convinced there was a better way of coaching (elite level) bowls, drawing on my background in elite squash, rather than the prevailing practice which continued unquestioned in bowls.
Nothing appeared to have changed over 6 years so I made a commitment to myself in 1997, with Neil Barras as my mentor, that I was going to produce a book or a video reflecting my approach to coaching which essentially was the pursuit of excellence. I thought that for bowls this excellence was all to do with attitude and attitude was best reflected in the practice of habits. In my opinion too few bowls books are of much assistance to (elite) bowlers or remarkably to coaches wanting to coach at elite level.
Here therefore is my book version ( the video production is also out for public display and is of a hands on practical format) of how I view coaching lawn bowls.
The book is a personal tribute to Siti Zalina Ahmed. Malaysia’s first ever Gold medallist My approaches were literally applied by Lina to the letter and are featured in this bowls book.
It is my way of describing the skills required in mental and tactical development that are part of the plan for ultimate success.
And what credentials do I offer you the reader. Well, briefly, these

 -          pre 2002 just a self belief in what I was doing through the formation of my ‘Elbows’ squad and writing a coaching column for a Bowls website;
-          2002 and beyond a Commonwealth Games gold medal coach (with 3 bronze medals to boot)
And my star pupil (Siti Zalina Ahmed), well, she was named Malaysia’s 2002 Olympian of the year.
May I now encourage you to read and explore one approach (to success); but be warned, learning success is a dynamic process so I encourage you to strive to learn more for further success.
