(edition 127 - 2004 of thoughts & observations on lawn bowls) All the good work in bowls starts with all of us at the local level. Then the work continues up the ladder so our colleagues (bowlers, coaches or administrators) end up doing their hard yards at the national level. Here is some information on the monthly bowls panel seminars we have provided at our club these past months as a service for those in the club who may see it as a benefit. ‘THE WAY TO WIN AT BOWLS’ October Program : Thursday 5 October 2004, 7.00 – 8.00pmA new club member, a current club member and Neil Barras will form the panel to start the discussion Team culture & club culture Mental preparation, mental skills (done in conjunction with Neil Barras and / or Craig Fox if available) ‘…DECISION MAKING IS A TACTICAL SKILL’ November Program : Thursday 4 November 2004, 6.45 – 7.30pm 4 club members agreed to be this month’s panel members to commence the discussion by providing their opinion / view on the statements below scenario: The pennant game is in progress and 15 ends have been played and we are level on the scoreboard even though the second has struggled for 5 consecutive ends: Comment on what shot options are available each head what considerations do you make in using your third How are we winning, losing What is the basis for the team choice of playing length As skip how will I get my teammate back into the game who in the four is best suited to execute certain shots Tiger Woods – his A, B, C game ‘GAME PLANS….IN BOWLS !!!’ December Program : Thursday 9 December 2004, 6.45 – 8.00pmThe people who agreed to be this month’s panel members to commence the discussion by providing their opinion / view on scenario: fail to plan plan to fail In June 1996, I wrote an article that said that most bowlers turn up at the green each weekend with no particular purpose in mind other than to play well and try to win on the day. Worse, I continued, supposedly elite bowlers turn up to practice sessions with no purpose in mind. Eight years on I have to tell you that most of our state / national representatives still generally follow this pattern. Question do you have any idea of what you / we are going to do to win our next contest Panel members Premier league skip/ player comment on their preparation Australian title finalists to comment on what they plan And if available to present that night State Rugby players / coaches to comment (including first hand observation on Rugby England’s Jonny Wilkinson) RUBC club members may find these monthly session useful to improve their own bowls and maybe better understand how others approach competition, and specifically pennant. There is no one way but there is always a better way. 2005 program still to confirm but may be Thursday 6/1/2005 (tbc) on ‘…Commonwealth Games 2006 : our sport, our club’ I hope the above may be a prompt to someone of you out there in club land.Lachlan Tighe ATTITUDE: ALL ABOUT PRACTISING HABITS
