(edition fifteen, 19/12/2001, of thoughts & observations on lawn bowls) For this the last column for the calendar year 2001, I hope to arouse interest in the readers by asking them to respond to my initial steps to develop a bowls academy at a club in Melbourne. I was invited a few weeks back to take on the role of establishing an academy at a large successful bowls club and I have made four headings to consider thus: Aims To maximise the potential of talented bowlers to enable the club to be acknowledged as the leader in lawn bowls competition and coaching in the Melbourne Eastern suburbs. People The categories of people who will affect the quality and viability of the academy are management, entrants, coaches, expert service providers. Programs Might entail competition calendar, comprehensive training program, a talent ID program Performance Equally applies to management and academy bowls performances and the measures need to be identified and quantified. An early priority for the club is to form an academy management committee to prepare recommendations to the club board for endorsement and to convene a public meeting to inform the bowls community of the academy and to exchange views on its role and purpose. So fellow bowlers and readers, if you have views on the idea of a bowls academy I would welcome your response as this concept has not moved to action stage yet so your comment might possibly be valuable to include from the outset. Merry xmas to all and hope my views are able to prompt your continued interest in bowls "Good Bowling"
