(edition 31, 11/12/2002, of thoughts & observations on lawn bowls) An important tool and skill that may be overlooked by us coaches is the need to plan and be prepared for contribution to the future development of the sport. In Victoria, the RVBA has asked me to sit in on a preliminary meeting later this week to discuss the submission preparation for entry of Bowls into the Institute of Sport. If you were invited to the meeting what would you be preparing as the viewpoint from a coach? I am going to suggest that the following headings be worth consideration, thus: Introduction on RVBA - the profile of Bowls in Victoria Structure : Participation in the Sport in Victoria Competition for elite bowlers (describe pennant, tournaments, state events) Coaching Developments (NCAS system, state coach, u.25 coach, CAB, RVBA committee, ‘Elbows’) Victorian Lawn Bowls Squad Scheme Talent Identification (previous approach, current system, future situation) Income Support and Employment Sports Science Research It would be my guess that aside from the official state programs, a lot is being done ‘on the ground’ by numerous coaches and clubs and that this volume of activity needs to be sought out, encouraged, harnessed and brought under the RVBA umbrella in a formal structure. There are many coaches seeking to upgrade to Level 2 status and I think these ladies and gentlemen should be provided opportunities ( if not now at least later on) to contribute to these planning initiatives so that the sport is seeking to secure the best approach to identifying and developing the talent of bowlers and coaches, using the skill and knowledge of the Level two coaching personnel to determine and then implement the agreed future direction of bowls in our state. If Victoria is strong, Australia is strong simply because it means all bowlers and coaches from all states and territories want to be top of the pile, and that is a good thing. So any of you in bowls and sport reading this, please feel free to contact me with your suggested content to a draft submission as I am pleased to forward it into the meeting(s) I believe I might be attending these next weeks on the submission. regards.
